With everything going on and Mika’s dental surgery yesterday I haven’t had a chance to mention our move tomorrow. See, my work is a “campus” with multiple buildings. Last year (May I think?) they decided to close down an entire building (building “A”) with the idea of saving money and possibly renting it out to another company. So the whole building A had to pack up and move into building C.
A few months ago, they implemented a plan to shut down all these small, regional offices around the country and condense them down to two locations; one of which was our campus. Now suddenly we went from tight already to overflowing. And big surprise, they’re opening up building A again. Our team (and one other) are the first to go back. Tomorrow is our last day in building C.
We’re all a little hesitant about the whole thing. Building A has been closed up and unused for at least 6 months. The a/c has basically been off and it’s been musty and most likely mildew-y in there as well. (This IS Florida after all.) The buildings aren’t very healthy to start with (sealed up boxes with no fresh air and revolving doors that only open with security cards) and now we’re going into the practically abandoned one. My boss said they claim they’ll be doing a professional clean – shampoo the carpets, paint, etc. – but that too is fraught with problems. (Um, hello trapped chemical fumes?) And that’s saying they’ll even really go to great length. As it is, they’re only opening up one floor right away (3rd the one we’ll be on) and keeping two sealed off (without the a/c running!) indefinitely and the last to be opened in the next month or so. Which means we’ll be entering on the 1st floor which will be hot and without climate control, bypassing 2nd which they’re locking us out of on the elevators and such and up to 3rd with 4th closed above us as well. Is it just me or does this not really sound healthy?
Did I mention they’re also not going to have vending machines or anything for us in building A until at least next month? And A is as far away from the cafeteria as you can be. Right now, in C, I just walk the length of the building, hop on the elevator and go down to the 1st floor and there’s the cafe. In the new building, I have to walk the length of the building, go down to the first floor, exit the building, walk the length of building C and then I’ll be in the cafe. What is a 10 minute max process there and back now is easily going to double. Behold my awesome digital drawing skills for an idea what I mean:
(You see I’m over in the corner of C and going to the opposite corner of A. There’s a pond and grassy area so you can’t cut across the other way and can only go the long away from one side to the other.)
Saturday morning I get to come in and set up my desk. Joy. I mean sure I get paid for it but $12 isn’t exactly worth the hour of my weekend just so I can set up my desk to ensure I’m “ready to go” on Monday. How about I just fucking set up my desk on YOUR time, not mine? Grr.
The only good thing is that I’ll get my own desk. We all will as we have a lot more room since there’s only like 80 people moving over there this weekend and another couple dozen the last weekend of the month. I’ve always shared a desk with one of the night crew since she comes in after I leave. It’s never been a problem – we’ve shared well – but it’s kinda neat to be able to have the whole desk, do what I want and leave things set up all the time. (Like I use a different keyboard and trackball and I have to move those out of the way when I leave each day and then set them up when I come in.)
So yeah that’s what’s up. I’m worried about the condition of A after so long unused but not much I can do about it. Hopefully, I can get in and get my desk set up quickly Saturday too so I can not ruin my whole day. I am diametrically opposed to working on Saturdays and I’m really aggravated I have to come in on less than one week’s notice on the one day I consider absolutely untouchable by work. My opposition to working on Saturdays is probably bordering on fanatical, but it’s just a very firm policy of mine and I’ve never made any apology for it and I’ve always made it clear I am NOT available on Saturdays. Ever.
*sigh* But anyway, tomorrow is my last day (for now?) in building C. We’ll see how this all works out in the long run.
